A walkthrough of Privacy & Security settings on TG/Discord to protect yourself against attackers.

Telegram

Telegram is a globally accessible freemium, cross-platform, cloud-based instant messaging service. The service also provides optional end-to-end encrypted chats and video calling, VoIP, file sharing and several other intriguing features.

Telegram is the domain that the majority of cryptocurrency projects DeFi use establish community. For this reason, it is also the medium many scammers use to perform what we call "social scams".

  • Go to "Settings" in Telegram

  • Go to "Privacy and Security"

  • Make your privacy settings match those shown in the image below this

  • Change the automatic media downloads to off for files. This is because people can put malware and viruses in a telegram chat and your device will automatically download it.

  • For Groups & Channels make the settings match those shown in the image below this

Discord

Discord is a VoIP and instant messaging social platform. Users have the ability to communicate with voice calls, video calls, text messaging, media and files in private chats or as part of communities called "servers".

A server is a collection of categorical channels, chat rooms and voice channels which can be accessed via invite links. Discord runs on Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, iPadOS, Linux, and in web browsers. As of 2021, the service has over 350 million registered users and over 150 million monthly active users.

  • Click on the "Settings" gear icon next to your username in Discord

  • Make sure your settings match the settings shown in the image below this

NOTE: Be weary of ANY direct messages you receive in both Telegram or Discord. It is likely best to completely ignore any DMs you receive on these platforms. If you are expecting a message, make sure to confirm the username/identity of your contact before engaging in conversation with them.
